Under this executive order, all State of Michigan and City of Detroit tax returns and payments ordinarily due on April 15, 2020, are now due July 15, 2020 with no interest or penalty until that date. Other Michigan city tax returns ordinarily due on April 30, 2020, are extended to July 31, 2020.
The state and city deadline extension largely mirrors the federal relief granted by IRS Notice 2020-18, which we’ve written about previously. This is welcome relief to all Michigan taxpayers and has eased some of the uncertainty in these trying times.
Please note that "payments ordinarily due on April 15, 2020, that are now due July 15, 2020" include first quarter 2020 estimated income tax payments. At this time, second quarter 2020 estimates are still scheduled and due on June 15, 2020.
