Michigan Offers Relief for Sales, Use and Withholding Tax

As the federal government and state governments across the country struggle to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 (Wuhan coronavirus) pandemic, state tax agencies are offering relief to taxpayers as the economy adapts to the social distancing requirements prescribed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Michigan is following suit by extending certain protections to affected taxpayers.

The Michigan Department of Treasury released a notice on March 17, 2020 extending the filing and payment deadline of sales, use, and withholding taxes for returns ordinarily due on March 20, 2020. For those taxpayers required to file sales, use, and withholding tax returns on that date, a 30-day waiver of penalty and interest has been granted. These returns can be filed and paid to the Michigan Department of Treasury by April 20, 2020 with no interest or penalty. This protection does not apply to any returns due after March 20, 2020. It is also not available for accelerated sales, use, or withholding tax filers.
